Israac Somali Community Association was established in 1981 by a group of Somali seamen, at that time working in the steel industry, and their families. The aim was to assist the Somali community in gaining access to a wide range of services in local society.

Over the years it has grown to provide educational classes, skills training and social events, all the while based at the Vestry Hall, Cemetery Road, S11.

The organisation has also been instrumental in lobbying for recognition of Somaliland. This resulted in Sheffield becoming the first city to recognise the nation on 2 April 2014.
